PANTHER POST
Volume 12, Issue 15
Principal's Corner
March 5, 2021
Hazel Dell Families,
March is one of my favorite months, partly because the days become a little longer, and also because of March Madness. I love to watch the NCAA college basketball teams pour their heart and soul into their game in the attempt to secure a spot to the next round in the tournament. It’s thrilling to watch the underdogs come from behind for a win and watch a nail-biter game be decided in the final seconds with a game winning shot.
To keep with this theme, we are hosting our own March Madness at Hazel Dell, but we are calling it March Madness MyPath Mania. The goal is that our students are engaging in their iReady MyPath lessons. These lessons are based on a student’s iReady math and reading diagnostic result, so they are designed specifically for your child, at their level. It’s like an individualized tutor! Students who complete 45 minutes of MyPath lessons each week perform 46% higher scores in reading and 36% higher scores in math than students who did not use the lessons. We want our students to pass one reading and one math lesson each week and we will be tracking our progress schoolwide and celebrating successes.
Here is a short video to explain how it all l works. I can’t believe I missed my lay-in shot!
Our tournament schedule is below, with Game Day tip off on Monday March 8! Thank you for your support from home and for being such a wonderful Hazel Dell Community. Let the games begin!
Wishing you and your family the best,
Lisa Reed

Change of Go-Home Plans
Any changes to your student’s normal going home routine need to be in writing to the school office by 11:00 am. This can be a note brought in by you, your student, or an email sent to hazeldell@vansd.org. Your note should include what the change is, adults and/or students involved, and the date of the change with a signature. If a different adult (than the normal routine) is picking your student up, they need to be included on your child’s emergency pick up list or your student will not be released. As always, please inform your student's teacher as well as the office. We will NOT take change of going home plans over the telephone. Our goal is the safety of all students.

Teacher Qualification Notice
Teacher Qualification Notice
In an effort to keep parents informed of the qualifications of teacher, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) allows parents to inquire at school whether their child(ren)’s teacher(s) have met state qualifications and certification requirements for the grade level and subject taught. Parents may inquire whether a teacher is under emergency or conditional certificate through which state qualifications were waived, and they may request information about undergraduate or graduate degrees the teacher holds, including graduate certificates and additional degrees, and major(s) or area(s) of concentration. Parents can also ask about paraprofessionals working with your child in reading, writing, and/or mathematics. We can tell you whether your child receives help from a paraprofessional and whether he/she meets state qualifications and/or licensing requirements.
Vancouver Public Schools annually conducts an audit of teacher assignments to assure that no teachers are assigned to areas for which they do not meet Washington State certification and/or endorsement requirements. Only on rare occasion does the District seek a wavier to certification. When this does occur, it is typically for a teacher who is within a few credits of completing the endorsement and is actively working on such completion.
